@theforgespace “Ever wondered why jewellers heat the tang before fitting a file handle? 🤔👇 In the jewellery workshop, fitting a handle to a file is a small but essential job. The tang of the file is heated first, then the wooden handle is tapped into place so the hot metal gently burns its exact shape into the wood. This creates a tight, secure fit without splitting the handle. The file is then quenched in water to stop the wood burning further and to protect the hardness of the tool. If the wood continues to burn, the hole becomes larger and the handle will eventually loosen and come off. File handles aren’t just for comfort, they are important for safety. Without one, the sharp tang can easily puncture your hand if the file slips, and the pressure from your palm can cause the tool to break.
