One of the things I found really tricky when I was first starting out in jewelry making was understanding how high my bezel should sit above the stone. I’ve made every mistake: too short, too tall, uneven, all of it. Following these simple guidelines shared by
@rosyrevolver can save you a lot of time and frustration! “1. Measure the thickness of the stone’s girdle/edge. Digital calipers recommended. 2. Select a bezel wire with a width that is no more than 1mm more than the height of your stone’s girdle. If commercially unavailable, you can sand or use a bench shear to custom cut your own width of fine silver sheet (28g works great). 3. When holding the wire up to the girdle of your stone, it should be just slightly taller. Best to check this on a perfectly flat surface such as your bench block.” Thank you Jess! I will also add that If you’re working with a smooth cabochon, meaning one without facets, the girdle is the side wall of the stone. The girdle height is measured up to the point where that straight side wall ends and the stone begins to curve inward into the dome. So your bezel wire should max sit 1mm higher than that point. I hope this visual is helpful. This weekend I'll be sending out an email with some more information about understanding stones and tips for setting them ☺️
