Ever wondered how jewelers cast plants? 🌿 Here’s how @affinitysilverworks explains it:
“This is a modification of lost wax casting—here are some differences that will give you more success!
Organic materials take longer to incinerate than wax, so the burnout time should be extended. There will be some guesswork involved, and it could be anywhere from 5 to 12 hours. But as a rule, assume that the more woody or fibrous the material is, the longer it will take.
With organic materials, there will almost certainly be some ash left behind in the mold. It needs to be removed or it can ruin the structure and texture of your casting! When I take my flask out of the kiln, I tap it on a fire-safe surface with the hole facing down to shake some ash out. I get the rest out by blowing into the hole with a canister of compressed air (the kind you use for cleaning a keyboard).”
