Here are some tips for doing Keum Boo on a hot plate from @taylorsaleem -“Keum-boo is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver. This technique is usually accomplished by repeatedly annealing and pickling sterling silver to bring a thin layer of fine silver to the surface. This is called “depletion”. (You can skip right to the good stuff by using fine silver sheet instead).
It’s important your piece is all soldered before starting keum boo. Overheating the gold by soldering with cause it to vanish. The finished piece is placed on a warm hot plate until it, too, is hot. You then rub the tissue-thin gold onto the silver using a burnisher. I like to use an agate burnisher.
Your piece can cleaned and oxidized as usual.
*fun tip* - before I got a hot plate, I found if you anneal your piece thoroughly on a kiln block, you can still apply the gold. But you have to work FAST before the metal cools, and can’t reheat it afterward. It’s a wonky process, but it works!” Thank you SO much for letting me share this Taylor 🙌 your work is stunning ❤️
