@thewildpine for showing me this board). The first step of this tutorial is to create a backplate for your stone, I’m using one a gorgeous Chinese Amazonite from
@newstoneagecabochon to keep the stone from moving while I trace my backplate I placed a little piece of double sided tape underneath. After you saw and file your backplate you want to mark out where your prongs will go. The amount of prongs is subjective to your stone but be mindful that you want enough to secure it. For the prongs I’m using 16g half round wire. I cut my six prongs by eyeballing them, since this is silver I don’t mind cutting away the extra bits. Next this is where the magic happens, this Kaiser Lee Board allows me to just push the prongs down around the baseplate and I can solder in one go. I could also solder my bail at this time too! Make sure you use ventilation, safety goggles etc! The main rule with prongs is you want them to reach over the stone’s girdle to hold it securely but not cover too much of the stone. For shaping I’m using snap-on Moore’s Sanding Discs. Pushing the prongs over can be done in a multitude of ways, I’m wiggling them over carefully using needle nose pliers with a few pushes of the plastic handle of the plier. To shape them and make sure they don’t snag on fabric I’m using Italian silicone wheels, these are safe on *most* stones but to be safe you can always test the bottom of your cabochon. I love this technique because one of the hardest things about soldering prongs is trying to do them all at once without them falling over LOL. 💪 Thanks to our sponsor
